02 / GOOD TO KNOW

A little reassurance
before you arrive.

From your first journey to everyday life in Saalbach, here are the answers to help you feel prepared.

Before you arrive

When do I need to be there?

We start our onboarding and teambuilding program with dinner and drinks together on 30 November at 16.00. Please make sure you arrive before then!

Do I get reimbursed for travel to Austria?

We reimburse 100€ one time for travel cost. To claim this, make sure you keep a ticket or receipt of your travel (for example plane ticket) and send it to us.

How do I get to Saalbach?

By plane:

The best option is to fly to Salzburg. From there it is about 2 hours to Zell am See by train*, and from there you can take a bus for 30 minutes to Saalbach that stops just minutes walking from the hotels.

Alternatively, you can also fly to Munich, but from there the journey to Saalbach by train* and bus is longer, about 3 to 5 hours.

*For train connections and tickets you can check the website of ÖBB or DB.

By train:

There are many overnight trains operated by ÖBB. To find suitable connections, check the ÖBB website. A lot of them stop in Salzburg, and from there you can take the local train and bus to continue to Saalbach.

By car:

If you plan to arrive by car, be sure to discuss this with management first, as parking is very limited.

What clothes do I need to bring for work?

We will provide you with black turtleneck tops. Please bring your own black shoes and black pants. More information about suitable work clothing can be found on the packing list!

When will I receive my employment contract?

You will receive your employment contract at the end of November. If we need any more documents from you, we will let you know!

Note: Once you have your contract and you are in Austria, you will need to register at the ‘Gemeinde’ (municipality). More info about that when you are here!

Working at the hotels

What are common work times?

As you can imagine, work times can vary a lot when working in a hotel and also depend on the department you work in. One shift is usually 8.5 hours (including 30 min break).

You might be scheduled for a morning shift starting at 6.00, a late shift starting at 15.00, or for a split shift. Split shift means you work a few hours in the morning, have the whole day free, and come back to work in the evening.

Days off/holidays

You will work 5 or 6 days per week as per your contract, with 1 or 2 days off. Your days off may not always be on the same day of the week. If you want a particular day off, please let your manager/supervisor know at least 2 weeks in advance.

Leave or holidays are usually not granted because of the busy nature of seasonal work.

Grooming guidelines

We expect a clean and well groomed appearance from everyone. That includes tidy hair, clean clothes, no nail polish and no overly strong make up.

Face piercings and tunnels need to be removed; earrings are ok as long as they are simple and not too big.

Tattoos are not an issue, as they will be mostly covered by the uniform (long sleeves and long pants)! If you are unsure, do not hesitate to ask.

Pay and Payslips

Your pay is specified in your contract. Your hours are logged in the Horeko App and paid out in the first week of the month. You will receive a pay slip via email.

Do I need to learn German?

We are a very international team, so with each other, we mainly talk English. But we do encourage all staff to learn some German, at least simple phrases to have a short conversation or to be able to greet the guests in the morning. Check out the list with important German phrases you should absolutely try to learn before you get here!

Your accommodation and facilities

Where will I stay?

Accommodation is provided for all staff at a cost of €150 per month. This will be deducted from your salary. The rooms are either in one of the hotels or in separate staff houses within walking distance of the hotels. The rooms come with bed linen and towels.

Many rooms are shared between 2 or 3 people and/or have a shared bathroom.

We will inform you where exactly you are staying and who your roommate(s) are as soon as you arrive!

Outside guests are not allowed to stay in staff accommodation without permission.

Shared living

We understand that for many of you this might be the first time living in a shared room. To make this as comfortable as possible for everyone, we ask everyone to be respectful of each other’s space, needs and work times and contact us if you have a particular concern or request. Please take the cleaning of shared spaces seriously, this contributes a lot to the comfort of everyone! A deposit of €100 will be taken from your first salary for the keys, uniform and staff accommodation to cover any incidentals.

We do our best to match roommates, but room changes might be necessary throughout the season for different reasons. But do not worry, more often than not you get close with your colleagues and roommates and it only adds to the experience!

How many meals are provided?

You will get breakfast and dinner provided by us, also on your days off.

Breakfast is served after the official breakfast for guests (around 10.00)

Dinner is served 16.30 to 17.30.

The exact time food is ready will be communicated via WhatsApp.

If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, we will of course accommodate you! Please let us know beforehand.

Is there a kitchen for staff use?

There is no staff kitchen, but you can use the hotel kitchen (but not during service times and ask the chefs if it is a good time to use it!)

Which of the hotel facilities can I use?

You are allowed to use the sauna, fitness and laundry free of charge, outside of standard operating hours for guests.

Sauna: Can be used between 7.30 and 8.30 pm, only if it is already turned on (We only turn it on after guest requests, so if it is off, we will not turn it on just for staff). To use it, let FO know earlier on the day. Ladies can make use of the Sauna at Leni Marie, gentlemen at Bärenbachhof.

Fitness: Can be used before 7 am and after 7pm (in Leni Marie).

Laundry: Laundry is available for staff use after 3pm. Bring your own detergent!

As the fitness and laundry are also used by guests, make sure you use them respectfully and leave them clean!

Friends and family stays

Outside of the peak periods (Christmas, New Year and Spring Break), you can book a reduced stay for your family or friends!

Book max. 2 rooms at a 50% discount, with the hotel reserving the right to cancel up to 48 hours before arrival (to allow for full occupancy).

Book rooms at a 25% discount, in which case the rooms are reserved at a fixed rate and cannot be resold if the hotel is fully booked.

Is there a discount for the ski lift pass/ski rental?

There is a worker’s discount for the season ski lift pass. You have to be here to buy it, but it must be done before 5th December!

Ski rental is free for staff

How do I get around in Saalbach?

If you do not have a car, do not worry! In Saalbach you do not need a car or public transport. Everything is easy to reach on foot, for example grocery stores, doctor’s office, restaurants etc.

However, there is a bus that goes through Saalbach and can take you all the way to Zell am See, and from there you can take trains to different places.
